WHY WASTE TO ENERGY
Waste to Energy is a hygienic and proven method of treating waste BY:
- reducing waste volumes by about 90%;
- producing valuable energy;
- replacing fossil fuels in energy generation;
- reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by diverting waste from landfills;
- ensuring security of energy supply;
- achieving renewable energy targets; and
- conserving natural resources.
One tonne of municipal solid waste (MSW) contains abount the same energy as:
- One tonne brown coal;
- 1/3 tonne of hard coal; or
- 250 litres oil
(Note: Assuming the calorific value of municipal waste = 10 MJ/kg; hard coal = 30 MJ/kg; oil = 42 MJ/kg)
