The Solution

WHY WASTE TO ENERGY

Waste to Energy is a hygienic and proven method of treating waste BY:

  1. reducing waste volumes by about 90%;
  2. producing valuable energy;
  3. replacing fossil fuels in energy generation;
  4. reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by diverting waste from landfills;
  5. ensuring security of energy supply;
  6. achieving renewable energy targets; and
  7. conserving natural resources.

One tonne of municipal solid waste (MSW) contains abount the same energy as:

  1. One tonne brown coal;
  2. 1/3 tonne of hard coal; or
  3. 250 litres oil

(Note: Assuming the calorific value of municipal waste = 10 MJ/kg; hard coal = 30 MJ/kg; oil = 42 MJ/kg)
